Can fighting techniques be used in self defense?
Ah, the age old problem. Fighting techniques are trained year round by millions of people. Fighting techniques such as boxing and MMA are created to be used in competition sport. But can you really use these techniques for proper self defense? Let’s see what we can find out when we look at that exact question.
First off, let’s examine some common fighting techniques. We’ll first look at the common jab. We now have two staple techniques, because the jab is usually followed up by a cross punch. Another common fighting techique is the round house kick. You can temporarily cripple your opponent when you use these devastating kicks properly. These are some of the staple fighting techniques we will be talking about.
First, we have the jab. Are jabs very useful in self defense or are they only useful as fighting techniques? Unfortunately these aren’t very practical in self defense situations. You see, in competition sport jabs are used as a quick strike, not a full out self defense blow. In real life, self defense situations are over in a few quick seconds, so a jab will not be very useful.
Next we have the cross punch. Cross punches can be extremely useful fighting techniques, or they can be used as self defense techniques. The cross punch can take out an attacker very easily because it is a very powerful strike. If placed properly one or two cross punches can take down even the strongest man. A cross punch would be a good technique to practice since it can be used as either.
And last, what about a roundhouse kick? Can you only use roundhouse kicks for fighting or can they be used as proper self defense techniques as well? It’s both yes and no. Roundhouse kicks to the head can put you in a very bad situation and can be very dangerous. However, a properly placed roundhouse kick to the groin can be an instant fight winner. As long as you remember not to kick above the belt you’ll be good to go.
So there you go. As you can see, not all fighting techniques can be used as self defense techniques, but almost all self defense techniques can be used as fighting techniques.
