Getting Value For Money From Exercise Equipment

The weight loss and general fitness business is a multi-billion dollar industry. There’s no shortage of companies ready to sell you every product, supplement, wonder drug and fitness kit available – all guaranteed to help you lose weight and get ripped within a short period of time. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, that the vast majority of such products are a waste of both your time and money. However, there are some items that are worth investing in if you want to lose weight, get fit or both.

First and foremost, you need to get a good comfortable pair of shoes. Virtually every form of exercise that you may choose to undertake, with the exception of martial arts and swimming, will require you to have appropriate footwear. Walking for instance, is an extremely effective way to shed a few pounds and generally get in shape. There are many health benefits in addition to weight loss and it’s perfect for anyone who hasn’t taken exercise for some time and who wishes to gradually ease themselves back into a regular exercise program.

However, if your shoes are uncomfortable, cause you pain or give you blisters, then you will find it very hard to keep on track with your walking schedule. Be sure to buy the best, most comfortable shoes that you can. You can use modern technology to your advantage by wearing shoes from the latest range of fitness footwear which are specially designed to boost the efficiency of your walking workout routine by raising the amount of work that your body’s lower muscles perform during normal walking activity. Currently, Skechers Shape Ups, Reebok Easy Tones and Fitflops sandals are available on the market, all of these claim to be scientifically designed to reduce impact stress and raise the effectiveness of your workout.

As you get into your walking routine, or maybe even progress to jogging, you will most likely want to monitor your results. A high quality pedometer is perfect for this. It can display your results in terms of the total distance covered, the number of steps taken, the time taken or the number of calories burned. This will help you to stay motivated.

Be sure to select a high quality pedometer. Some very cheap ones are available, but it’s worth paying a few dollars more for a good quality device. Cheap pedometers can be very inaccurate.  A well known make such as Tanita or an Omron pedometer will be more accurate and less likely to fail.

A heart rate monitor is also a good idea – although you may not need this at first when you’re just starting your exercise program. Depending upon a number of different factors, including your age and what your goals are, you may wish to keep your heart rate between certain predefined values during your exercise session. You can get heart rate monitor watches which are easy to use and are relatively inexpensive these days.

If you don’t have one already, an mp3 player might be worth buying. You can listen to motivational tracks if that helps you keep going. Alternatively you can just play your favourite tunes whilst exercising – that’ll probably work just as well. The miles and the time will fly by much more quickly when you have your favourite band playing in your ears. You can pretty much pay as little or as much for an mp3 player as you want these days – but it’ll probably help to keep you motivated and be worth the money.

If you want to spend a few dollars on the latest no effort ab cruncher or wonder juice made from crushed Himalayan berries, then feel free. However, the four items outlined above should be more than adequate to let you get started – and they will almost certainly be of assistance to you in your fitness routine, whatever it is.
