When the holidays roll around, people look forward to food and drinks galore. People also think about the number of pounds they’re going to gain after the holiday season. That’s why most new year resolutions are related to weight loss and exercise. People tend to shift their focus to family, friends and celebrating the holidays. The hectic schedule leaves no time for exercise. This is why in spite of the holiday frenzy, people gain weight. For some, gaining weight during the holidays is a foregone conclusion. Losing weight has to wait until the holidays are over. Still, it would mean less stress if we don’t gain any weight at all.

If you don’t have much time for exercise, make whatever time you have count. More precisely, make 10 minutes count. You can make up for the shortened time by increasing intensity. You should opt for activities that you can do without any equipment needed. Walking, jogging in place, jumping ropes, even dancing. You have to work hard though. You have to keep your perceived exertion between 7 and 8. This means you’re sweating hard and barely able to talk. Remember, you have to keep this up for 10 minutes. You may also shorten your weight training exercises. Choose compound multi joint moves that work multiple muscles. You can do squats, lunges, triceps dips, push ups among others.

You have to grab every opportunity you get. One of the simplest ways of being active during the holidays is walking. Wearing a pedometer will allow you to count how many steps you have made. An average person can walk 5 miles by taking 10,000 steps. If you can manage this, good for you. If not, just make do with what you can. It all adds up. Get into the holiday spirit by touring the neighborhood lights. You may walk instead of driving the car. You can join the kids and see how fast you can run. Or you can make it productive by having a snow shoveling contest.

You should never skip your meals. Though it is tempting, you should not make up for a pig out. You should eat small frequent meals. It keeps your metabolism going as well as prevents you from getting hungry. Eat something healthy before hitting the party. You will be less vulnerable to yummy foods by doing this. Choose one treat at the party that you like the best. Choose that food which you may only eat during the holiday season. You should limit your alcohol intake. Consume lots of water.

The holidays give us a chance to renew our ties with family and friends. The holidays is a time to exchange gifts and share good time. By all means, enjoy the holiday season. Give presents and presence to your loved ones. But take care of your health and fitness. It is among the things you can give to your self.
