Martial Arts For Self Defence And Lifestyle

People often start martial arts for a number of different reasons. These include things such as self defence, fitness, discipline or even to become a better person. All these things can really be broken down into the two categories of self defence and lifestyle.

Let’s look at the Self Defence side. This is probably one of the most common reasons for someone starting martial arts. Usually it comes with the person expecting to also gain one or more of the lifestyle benefits on the side, such as fitness. So, at the end of the day the person wants to learn how to fight and be able to defend themselves effectively when needed. These people usually end up finding the lifestyle benefits at a later stage, and then realising how much of a positive impact that side can have.

So, let’s look at the other catagory, Lifestyle. Most of the time this is the reason people with previous martial arts experience start a new style, or come back after not training for a while. They will more then likely do it for the self defence side as well, but the lifestyle positives are what draw them the most. Quite often they remember how good they felt while training in a style like Kung Fu Northern Beaches, or how mentally relaxed they may have been. Lfiestyle actually means all the things that have an impact on your way of life. This can go from fitness levels, to your personal charactor, through to your mind state. All types of martial arts come to this area, although some in different ways then others. We can use external martial arts and internal martial arts as a good example. The lifestyle benefits you will gain from internal styles are stronger along the lines of calming the body and mind, relieving stress, personal healing etc. While the external styles have more of a focus on fitness levels, increasing strength etc. Most styles will give both sides to some degree by default, but not to the level of the others.

When I talk about styles I am also being more specific then just say karate or kung fu. I am talking about individual styles, and also different schools within these individual styles. One example may be Kung Fu. Kung Fu contains both external and internal styles, and also external styles may contains some schools of that style that are actually teaching an internal method. This means that it is the school more so then just the style itself. Wing Chun Kung Fu can be an example of this. Although Wing Chun is usually taught as an external style sometimes it may be taught as an internal style. One example of internal Wing Chun is Dragon Tao Kung Fu (Martial Arts Northern Beaches). They have a genuine lineage of internal Wing Chun from Hong Kong. This used relaxed power and internal body alignment to generate the large amounts of force. While it can be more difficult for some it allows people that are not strong or large to also be powerful. Once again this has a lifestyle benefit.

Lifestyle is not just where you dine and what sports you do. It also means your general way of life. This is important for anyone of any age. Ranging from children to the older generation. Finding a martial art that will benefit where you are in life and what you want in life can help you greatly. For children studying martial arts they may see the benefits of improved concentration or coordination. They may want to lift their self esteem or confidence. So there is more to it then just self defence (although this is still very important).
