Every school has its unique colors and order of taekwondo belts. However, typically all taekwondo practitioners begin with white belt and receive a black belt only after a long period of hard training, which continues for two or more years.

Between both these, many different variations are observed. The actual colors of the belts in a progression are not specifically standardized, so a student could get differing colors of belts in a slightly different order based on his or her school. Also the number of colored belts varies from as many as thirteen to as few as six. The most known colors for taekwondo belts are blue, green, red, black and yellow .

Additions that are applied to the belts are also various – such us stripes and tags. Some clubs or organizations have two levels of green belt, as an example light green and dark green. Some have a green belt and a camouflage belt; some have one level of green but add in an extra level by getting a green belt with a blue strip. Some clubs have purple belts and some do not.

Every school or organization also sets the requirements for moving from one belt to the other or for acquiring a stripe or tag. In general, schools that attract a lot of young children will have more levels of belts and more colors to give the young people plenty of time to ascend before they grow to be black belts. Some organizations won’t let any student below a specific age test for a black belt typically until they’re fifteen or eighteen years old. Black belts awarded before those ages are considered youth black belts and aren’t recognized by many groups. A young person who has achieved a youth black belt is still often required as an adult to begin back at white belt.

Most all taekwondo schools have formal grading sessions with one or more black belt holders observing and or testing. Throughout these sessions a student will likely be asked to perform a taekwondo poomse or other taekwondo kicks, which demonstrates that the student has achieved an understanding of an ability to perform the physical moves suitable to his level. Some schools also need written essays on the philosophy or history of taekwondo or Korea. Some demand the answering of questions orally on things such as the symbolism of the belt color or the five tenets of Taekwondo. Some schools even demand sparring matches to advance in rank in the taekwondo belts.

The two most common martial arts practiced in North America are karate and tae kwon do. Many wonder what the difference between these two styles is. This is especially the case for those who are just starting to look around for a studio. Even so, with most students in both disciplines wearing the same variety of white gi uniforms with different colored belts.

ITF taekwondo encyclopedia

The islands of Okinawa in Japan are where modern conventional karate was nurtured. Karate has varied styles under its discipline, however, all are simply considered as Japanese styles today. The color belt arrangement was designed to stand for the various ranks of karate practitioners with white for trainees and black belt (with various degrees) for teachers and senior. Except for these two there is a whole range of other different colors. Modern tae kwon do was developed in Korea after much influence from Japanese karate during the occupation by Japan. That is why tae kwon do is at times regarded as Korean karate. The Koreans mimicked the white uniforms with similar colored belt ranking system for tae kwon do. Today, there are two main styles of tae kwon do, one under the International Federation and the other under the World Federation. Lots of schools have reinforced a black lining under their white attire for black belt classification.

encyclopedia of taekwondo

A V-neck top is seen a lot of times in schools under the World Federation. At the same time, there are older Korean forms such as tang soo doo and moo duk kwan. Some of the more Americanized schools also use uniforms with other colors such as red, black and blue in addition to the traditional white.

It can be generalized that in karate, one would use their arms or hands for 60% of the time for strikes or blocks while the use of legs for kicking will be about 40%. This breakdown is seen in the many forms or katas of karate which are set routines which simulate fighting against imaginary opponents using martial arts techniques. The styles of tae kwon do would have the reverse percentage breakdown which is 40% hands and 60% legs. There is also more emphasis on higher kicks to the head level than in karate. Practitioners also use more jumping or flying kicks where one is on high while throwing kicking techniques. The Korean techniques or movements are normally a little shorter and simpler than the karate moves. Some tae kwon do schools have inserted the old karate patterns in its curriculum also.

Martial arts include a lot of different arts that concentrate on a certain aim. These kinds of arts were created through understanding the particular demands and movement prototypes with the right discipline. There are actually a lot of benefits of martial arts training. The best benefits are going to be discussed after talking about the fundamental attributes of unique types of martial arts training.

Boxing, Taekwondo, Judo, Jiu-jitsu, Dim Mak and Wing Chun are the most popular and effective forms of martial arts. They are superb for self defense since they train an individual in the most popular fighting styles. Boxing is an art which points toward the ideal technique of punching in different styles whereas Taekwondo helps in enhancing your kicking abilities.

Judo stands out as the art that shows you ways to make your foe’s weight disadvantageous for him by teaching you about the weak areas of distinct kinds of bodies. In contrast, Dim Mak is one of the deadliest arts; this particular art allows you to understand the uses of deadly strikes, which can even cause the death of the particular person they’re employed on. Wing Chun is an art that improves your motion economizing skills. This particular art is especially helpful in close combat.

Martial arts training doesn’t just improve your physical conditioning but it additionally helps to build your body’s overall flexibility substantially. Taekwondo is the most effective to enhance your flexibility as it trains you in various kinds of high kicks. Martial arts are not just a physical exercise but they additionally enable you to strengthen your mental condition by increasing your focusing power and self control. Fear and anger are two such emotions that might be brought under your control.

Another important advantage is for women. 1 out of 3 women will be attacked during their lifetime. Self defense in awful cases such as rape, kidnapping, robbery, murder attempts and theft can easily enable you to save your life or personal possessions from becoming stolen by the assailant by scaring him away.

The prices for this kind of instruction are pretty reasonable. They could range at a very low scale of about $50 – $100 a month. Paying such minimal fees is much better than taking the risk of getting attacked. This instruction has so many benefits such as the physical, mental and emotional elements, which is why it’s so popular nowadays. I would like to remind you of two really popular sayings which are of course very correct “health is wealth” and “prevention is better than cure.” Don’t try to escape from difficulties. Simply train yourself to manage any kind of situation on your own.

How to pick a good martial arts school to train in is very important. Do you know what you want from your martial arts school? Are you looking to only get a good workout and burn off some excess weight? If so, then martial arts is for you. But perhaps you are looking for more than a weight loss program.

Many like the idea behind the discipline needed to master martial arts. When you are in class you will have to follow the lead of the instructor. Some instructors prefer to be called master. But in any case, if you choose a martial arts class to work out in, be prepared to submit to the direction of the class leader. This is different from simply going to a health spa to work out where you are in control of your exercise routine.

Line up your physical characteristics and age with the type of school you choose. If you are older, then you should look at martial arts that do not require as much agility. For instance the grappling style martial arts like Judo, or Jiu-Jitsu is a good choice because they emphasize technique and leverage.

Perhaps you are interested in a particular culture. If so, then choose the martial art associated with that culture. Find a martial arts school taught by a member of the culture you are interested in, or at least someone who has trained under someone from that culture.

Some find the martial arts school they want to join and jump right in on the classes. Others choose to observe classes before they join. Only you can decide what is best for you, but if you are inclined to join and start participating, make sure you are choosing the right class.

If you find out it is not the class for you, then you might lose the money you paid in advance for the class. Speak with the instructor or business owner about their refund policy.

What is your level of training? Do you already know enough that you can confidently spar with the instructor and other students? Perhaps you are a beginner. If you are experienced then choose a class with students at your level or slightly above. If you are a beginner then you will want to ease your way into training that includes sparring.

Take notice of other students in the class. This is an advantage you have when you observe a class before joining. Take note of how the students treat the instructor. Take note how students treat each other. If the class is made up of people who want to show off their martial arts prowess at the expense of safety, then you might look for another class.

Check the instructor’s qualifications. The instructor might present various degrees of martial arts training, but if he is not a good teacher, you might look elsewhere for training. Some great martial arts fighters cannot teach. On the other hand a great teacher might not be the award winning martial arts champion. These are but a few of the considerations when looking for the right martial arts school.

On a quick side note, Martial Arts Equipment Direct is an excellent source for all your martial arts equipment. Stop by and check out their top notch inventory of sparring gear and remember to have a look at the groin guards as well.

Most people think of martial arts and the beginning of MMA tournaments they think most likely of the Japanese, Korean, and Chinese fighting styles and martial arts matches in China and Japan that pitted various styles against every other. However combat has been around since the beginning of time. For individuals that believe in creation, the story of Cain killing his brother Able is 1 of the first stories and events in the bible. After that, while stories of numerous ancient battles depict individuals between forces armed spears and knives you can be certain those pitched battles needed some serious hand-to-hand combat that required much much more training and guts to survive than anything anybody experiences within the UFC octagon these days.

When you look at the ancient Greece and Rome. It is possible they were the first known civilizations that really developed unarmed combat training. Still even in the octagon today you will find the remains of Greco-Roman wrestling, from tournaments held thousands of years ago. You can also be sure that surviving on the streets during those times was a lot tougher than it is these days, particularly without good communications for law enforcement and no street lights, a time when even 1 Roman Emperor secretly snuck out during the night to kill for fun.

Then you’ve the prestigious gladiator tournaments that were perhaps the primary mixed martial arts tournaments, throwing together warriors from all over the recognized world in to the arena for fights to the death. Fighters exactly where brought to Rome to perform from Africa, Asia and Europe, every with their own unique style. Surely if any of these warriors had been resurrected these days they would laugh at the octagon and today´s MMA competitions. Rules? There were none. Submissions, tap outs? Winning back then meant killing your opponent. Besides the hand to hand combat, unarmed fighters were often thrown up against armed assailants and even tigers and lions. Forget fighting for a championship belt, either you won or were killed. How´s that for motivation?

Imagine the condition you had to be in to participate in during individuals times. Plus there were no supplements, steroids or weight machines and as these competitors were prisoners you can bet there wasn´t much of a choice of diet, or especially the luxury of eating 6 to 7 times a day. So when you really feel like bellyaching within the gym, and you wish to complain your poor physical condition on the fact that eating healthy is just too expensive or feel like giving up within the octagon, remember exactly where MMA training really comes from and stop feeling sorry for yourself.

Wouldn’t you love to have all those shiny tournament plaques there is on display at your school or at home? Well, you can. All you need to do is enter in a number of martial art tournaments and win them! So, we got a little ahead of ourselves because you might be asking yourself. How do you get there? The answer to this is simple: sparring. You must work very hard to geat a great deal of situational experience in training to find yourself on the winners podium with a medal or trohpy. You need experience and skill and that is why sparring training is a must. Or, more accurately, proper sparring is a must.

So, here are a few tips to help you get the most from of your sparring sessions:

Let’s straighten out something out from the right here: sparring is not fighting. Sparring is a drill designed to enhance your fighting skills. Like we have been told since we were kids it is not about winning or losing but how you prepare for it. It is about improvement. That means you need to curb your competitive spirit and approach sparring with an attitude centering on a positive learning experience.

Also, if you are not brown or black belt, you should never be sparring without proper supervision fr om an instructor. In addition to having a knowledgeable eye presenting you with tips and pointers, there will be someone there to ensure the sparring session stays light and friendly.

It is imperative that in now way do you spar without the proper MMA gear on. Yes, you see professional fighters sparring without such equipment all the time. They are also professionals and they have the experience to handle such training. If you are training as a hobby or for amateur or tournament competition, you will want to wear as much protective gear as possible. This includes head, chest, feet, hand, and groin protection. Doing this will minimize the likelyhood of injury and this gives you the change to train more and safer.

Always keep intensity and physical contact levels low. You don’t have to practice at 100% to develop sharp your sparring skills. In fact, doing so is often self-defeating. You want to be able to assess your strengths and weaknesses while sparring while refining the areas you excel and enhancing (or avoiding) that are underdeveloped. It is very tough to do this when you are training with excess contact or intensity and such heavy training should be limited. However, limited does NOT mean never. It is important to train in the state of exhaustion you will be in durying a compeition so you must push yourslef very hard. A rough estimate is to do full intensity sparring about 10% of your training.

Spar according to the rules of the tournament you wish to enter. This way, you will be able to work the tournament rules to your advantage when you compete. It is important that you wear the same sparring apparel while training that you will wear when in a competition. If you train in mixed martial arts shorts and martial arts shoes then you are in a tournament that requires a uniform and doesn’t allow shoes, you will feel very off when the competition arrives. Always pick your sparring partners wisely. You want someone who is safe, controlled, and non-competitive but still knows how to push you to improve. Be sure to avoid sparring partners who are ultra competitive or they feel like they have to prove something to you!

Karate is a martial art that was developed in Okinawa in the Ryukyu Islands. Because it generally involves the studying and the training of fight methods, some branches including the training of weapons, some people may have concerns about how aggressive this sport can actually be. This is an understandable concern as well because, as the Chief Instructor of Shotokan Dojo once opined, media depicts individuals who learn this art to use to kill.

This concern has no true merit, however; in reality, many a karateka study this martial art for the purposes of self defense and it typically only trained by the people who possess the greatest of self discipline. The martial art exists in many forms.

Taekwondo is the national sport of South Korea. There are many benefits to be had in training for this martial art, including a full work out with plenty of stretching, and the learning of a form of self defence. Mixed martial arts involves striking and grappling, making it a full contact sport. Judo is another variation, originating in Japan – a modern martial art that is commonly performed.

Learning a martial art such as taekwondo, karate, judo or mixed martial arts can be a very beneficial thing to do rather than taking on some other sport, such as baseball. As well as all the health benefits, learning a martial art is also a fantastic way to get out and to meet new people. Not only that, but learning martial arts can build up a person’s self esteem, as well as respect, concentration and courtesy.

Your child may actually be much safer learning Karate or Judo than he/she would be taking part in rugby or football. Additionally, in the instances of children who have special needs, such has suffering from attention deficit disorder, or any other instances of difficulty with learning or suffering hyperactivity, it is highly recommended for them to learn martial arts.

Many classes centre around sparring which is very much about the training of kicking and punching, but if this is too aggressive for you, you may want to find another class where this is not the focus; albeit safe and well protected.

Martial arts' popularity in the west is a relatively recent phenomenum; they have been studied and practised in Asia for many hundreds of years. There are many different styles, but one of the most well known and most practiced is Judo. It is one of only two martial arts practiced as a viable competitive sport in the Summer Olympic games.

Judo originated in Japan and became a full contact martial art in the 1800's and is therefore a very new art compared to some that have been practised for 100's of years. The founder's name was professor Jigoro Kano, who had previously studied much older martial arts forms such as Jiu-Jitsu, and then changed and unified what he referred to as disconnected principles and forms. judo, or Kano Jiu Do, was born out of many of the same principles and techniques; with a focus on encouraging the development of the mind, body and character of the student.

The word Judo specifically means "way of gentleness", and may be referring to the soft method of indirect force on the attacker and using his force against him by adapting well to given circumstances to your advantage as they may change. Many times Judo movements involved moving to the side and allowing for the attacker to fall from his own force, sometimes aided by a foot to the attacker's ankle or foot. Kano did not want his discipline to be based on a principle of killing as was the case with other older martial arts styles; rather he wanted students of Judo to use the discipline to improve all aspects of their lives.

Titles of Judo students have changed over the years. At its founding, only the instructors were called Judoka, while students were called kenkyu-sei meaning "trainee". Now anyone who practices the art is called a Judoka and the instructor is called a sensei. The place of practice is generally called a dojo. The uniform worn by the Judoki is called the Judogi, and is worn by all within the dojo.

The student of Judo learns many forms and techniques. These include many forms and techniques including standing and ground fighting techniques, throwing and grappling forms, and both the Ancient and Five Forms of modern Judo. Getting students to 'spar' off eachother is a great way to check their understanding of the martial arts' methodology and also to determine what rank they should be in.

Martial Arts Home Study

When you learn martial arts online there are a few areas in which you need to ensure that you have good techniques. Things like power and accuracy are some of the attributes you need. However if you develop them in the wrong order long term it can lead to bad habits.

Power

Once where happy with the form and speed of the technique then we can start focus on adding more power to the skill or technique. To hit a target as fast as you can won’t have much effect in a real self defence situation if there is no power in your strikes. To start adding more power focus on bending your knees slightly and digging your toes in the floor, it’s what boxers call sitting down in your technique. To add power into your technique you need to hit targets, a kick shield, focus pad or bag will help in this area. Focus your mind on going through the target with your technique and relaxing your body and only tensing your muscles at the exact moment of impact.

Accuracy

In self defense situations it’s often not what you strike with but where you strike that has the most effect. For example if you punch someone in the face it may not have as much effect if you struck someone in the throat. So when practicing your techniques be aware where you are striking because muscle memory can set in, if you shadow your front kick and you strike the chest area it's going to be a natural reaction to hit this area in a fight as oppose to a more effective area to strike such as the groin.

You can develop accuracy through martial arts training and shadowing by visualizing your opponent and making it real in your mind and be aware of your target area you aim to strike. Do it in your mind first by visualizing, imagine striking with power, imagine what effect this strike has on your opponent or attacker, and then actually do it for real, you will see a big difference in your performance.
