The Negative Effects Of Getting Too Much Exercise

As with anything else in life, too much exercising is bad for you. Doing it beyond normal may actually yield problems, instead of making you fitter and healthier. Doing it excessively is just as bad as not doing it at all. The problems which may arise include anything from fatigue to some serious injuries.

Perhaps one of the reasons why people tend to spend a lot of hours at the gym or on their Weider 200 at home is because of the adage ‘no pain no gain’. Yes, there’s some truth to that as it’s normal for your muscles to feel a little bit sore after working out. However, something that extends for days and gets in the way of your daily activities isn’t.

Whether you’re doing cardiovascular exercises or resistance training, your body needs ample time to rest. As with the case of cardio routines, they may be done on a daily basis, but on varying intensities. For instance, today you may ride your mongoose mountain bike or sprint for a few miles. Tomorrow you may want to do something lighter, like walking.

With the case of resistance training, there should be a rest period in between sessions for 24-48 hours. This will allow the muscles to repair themselves. Otherwise, you won’t be able to perform very well at the gym because they’re sore and weak. And what’s even worse than that is they’re susceptible to getting seriously injured.

There are certain warning signs that you could be exercising too much than usual. It’s beyond experiencing back pain or neck pain. You will feel worn out when in fact exercising should make you feel energized. You will have headaches and decreased appetite. It’s also not unlikely for you to have trouble getting to sleep at night.

Soreness will extend for days, thus becoming a nuisance when you try to walk or perform your day-to-day activities. Your immune system will also be affected. You become more prone to catching a cold, sore throats and other illnesses as your body’s natural means of defending itself had been impaired by having physical exercises beyond normal.

The best way to recuperate from such is to take a long rest. This will allow your body to bounce back. Having massages also help mobilize and flush out metabolic waste products that give you that soreness. Remember that exercising is meant to make you fitter and healthier, not the other way around.
