When you hear the term ‘self defense tactics’, what are the things that come to your mind? Fighting in self defense using martial arts? Maybe, but it is more than that.

The goal of self defense

To be able to understand what self defense is, you must understand its goals and applications, not just the techniques. [What comes to mind when talking of defending yourself is fighting your assailant using martial arts techniques in order to disable him or her]

Although such defense might eventually cause you to engage and fight your attacker and such actions could result in hurting the person, its goal is just not that. It is personal survival – your survival in the face of a potential or actual attack.

The phases of self defense

Self defense is not all about involving in a fight but its goal is for one’s survival. Is is consist of three phases. They are pre-engagement, the actual engagement and the disengagement. It begins in pre-engagement phase. An attack from an assailant has no assurance when to happen. Some self defense attacks have its utmost importance of minimizing if not totally preventing any possible attacks. Avoiding places where an attack may possibly occur is one of an example. Isolated places where a potential stage for any attacks should be avoided.

Some experts suggest that you make it a habit to stay out of reach of a person to whom you are conversing. Make it a habit that when you talk to people you do not really know you do it with a close friend even if it is uncomfortable to them as it will benefit you. You should still be cautious even if you have your friends around you. You should be alert and prepared at all times on what is the necessary thing to do. If confronted by a potential assailant, appear confident and talk to him in a loud authoritative tone of voice.

If the person is still intending to pursue his assault, you may run away from him to escape or you may face him in a fight if you have knowledge in self defense techniques. The engagement phase. It is time to defend yourself if and when you fail to prevent the person who accosted you from attacking. It is in this phase where you apply the techniques you learn and don’t try to choose from any of it or choosing any tactics for you may not have enough time for it. The tactic is that you just to do what you have to do.

Stop your assailant from harming you and do not try to kill him. If you go beyond that, you yourself might be violating the law and you will have to answer for it. Disengagement phase. Getting out of the scene immediately is extremely a necessity for you for the reason the person who attacked you fought with might have companions that may attack you as well. Lastly, applying sound self defense tactics you learned in your self defense class could save your life especially in tight situations.
